New baby clothes are beautiful - but putting them on straight away? Not a good idea. Factory residues, finishing agents and transport dust sit in the fibers. This is pure stress for a newborn's sensitive skin.
Here's everything you need to know: when, how and with what to pre-wash the first outfit properly.
When to wash? 📅
The ideal time is between weeks 35 and 37. You still have enough energy and everything is freshly washed - even if the baby arrives earlier.
Don't put everything in one machine 🧼

The most common mistake: washing everything together at 60 °C. Each fiber needs its own treatment.
Cotton & linen (bodysuits, rompers, burp cloths)
Robust and uncomplicated. 40-60 °C, sensitive heavy-duty detergent - done.
Wool & cashmere (cardigans, baby blankets) ☁️
The sensitive ones. Too hot or incorrectly spun, and your favorite item is two sizes smaller.
Wash cashmere and wool: max. 30 °C, wool wash cycle, 400 rpm. A fine laundry bag provides additional protection against friction in the drum.
The right detergent 🌿
- ✅ Sensitive liquid detergent without perfume and dyes - for everything
- ✅ Mild wool or cashmere detergent - for natural materials (approx. 1 teaspoon is enough)
- ❌ Always leave out fabric softener. It reduces absorbency, sticks natural fibers together and is one of the most common triggers of contact allergies in newborns.
The checklist: What do you really need? 📝

| Garment | Amount | Wash |
|---|---|---|
| Swaddling bodysuits (size 50/56) | 6-8 pieces | Cotton, 40-60 °C |
| Rompers / pants | 4-6 pieces | depending on label |
| Cardigans / cardigans | 2-3 pieces | Cashmere, 30 °C wool cycle |
| First hats | 2-3 pieces | depending on material |
| Socks / mittens | 3-4 pairs | depending on material |
| Gauze diapers / burp cloths | 6-10 pieces | Cotton, up to 60 °C |
| Baby blanket | 1-2 pieces | Cashmere, 30 °C wool cycle |
Drying & storage 🌤️
Cotton: Shake out, hang up or tumble dry (according to label).
Cashmere & wool: Never hang up - the weight of the water stretches the fibers. Instead, pull into shape flat on a towel and leave to dry at room temperature. No direct heat, no sun.
Store: Keep everything folded in a closed drawer or cupboard - no dust until birth. Never hang cashmere items on hangers, but stack them horizontally.
Well prepared - arrive relaxed
Once you have prepared your first outfit properly, there is no more stress afterwards. The clothes are clean, ready and waiting - just like you.
